Five original compositions conjure the cities and towns of Chile's central south — one of the most quietly breathtaking corners of the Americas — connected by solo guitar interludes born from the memory of long car rides through forests and rain. The music is rooted in the jazz tradition and shaped by South American rhythms, featuring a distinctly modern harmonic and melodic language.Mario Wellmann is a Chilean jazz guitarist and composer based in New York City and Austin. He has performed across the Americas and Europe at venues including The Django, Jazz Forum Arts, Soapbox Gallery, the Elkhart Jazz Festival, Sala Master at Radio Universidad de Chile, Thelonious Lugar de Jazz in Santiago, among others. He received two DownBeat Student Music Awards in 2023 and was awarded the Fondo de la Música — Chile’s equivalent of the National Endowment for the Arts — to record Ecos del Sur. He is joined by Guillermo López, a Juilliard-trained bassist who has performed at the Village Vanguard, The Django, and Dizzy’s Club, and by Austin’s own Daniel Dufour on drums.Please Note: MONKS JAZZ IS NOW A FULL SERVICE BAR.
