Kingdom is Austin's dedicated electronic music nightclub, and its story is one of resilience. The original Kingdom opened on East 5th Street in 2011, built by Garrett Boyd, a former doorman at the old Barcelona Nightclub on Sixth Street. Over the next seven years, it became a world-class destination for house, techno, and dance music, pulling international DJs and developing a devoted following. Then in 2018, the landlord changed the locks without warning, and Kingdom went dark. Boyd went through a rough period personally, but in 2022, he and his brother Justin reopened Kingdom at 505 East 7th Street in the Red River Cultural District, in the former Ironwood Hall space. The new room nearly doubles the old capacity at 600 people and features serious lighting rigs and a sound system built for electronic music. The design was inspired by everything from the Amsterdam Dance Event to Blade Runner. Kingdom books house, techno, EDM, and the full spectrum of dance music, bringing in nationally and internationally recognized DJs alongside local talent. The entrance is through the alley between Neches and Red River, which adds to the feeling that you are heading somewhere underground even though you are in the middle of downtown. Kingdom won Best New Club from the Austin Chronicle in 2025. If you care about dance music in Austin, this is the room that takes it most seriously.
