The 04 Center at 2701 South Lamar Boulevard occupies a building that served as Faith United Methodist Church from 1968 until 2018, when it became home to Austin New Church and took on its current name. The space retains the bones of a church, high ceilings, wooden pews, and an acoustic quality that makes everything sound rich and full, but it functions as a music and entertainment venue that hosts all styles of performance. The result is one of the more unique rooms in Austin, a place where a singer-songwriter can fill the space with just a voice and a guitar and it sounds incredible. The 04 Center books a range of acts, from folk and Americana to jazz, classical, comedy, and spoken word. The pew seating means this is a proper listening room, not a bar with a band in the corner. People come here to sit and pay attention, and the performers respond to that energy. The South Lamar location puts it in a part of town that is increasingly developed but still has pockets of the old Austin character. The venue provides a platform that feels historically welcoming and acoustically special, the kind of room where the building itself is part of the performance. It is not a church anymore, but there is something almost sacred about the way music sounds in this space.
